Second Son: Growing Up in Vermont's Northeast Kingdom
Barry grows up in the long shadows of Vermont’s Green Mountains. He must deal with his father and the horrible message he delivers. Barry lets off steam on ball fields and basketball courts, hunts the local woods, fishes nearby streams and the Lamoille River, gets his first job, and buys his hunting rifle.
In this New England coming-of-age story, Barry leaves behind the questions that troubled him throughout high school and college. But following his father’s death, he faces the question that has lingered his entire life.

"A story so common in the North East Kingdom of Vermont for boys who grew up in the 50s and 60s. Barry Dimick remembers his childhood with sensitivity, bravery and accuracy. This collection of stories about hunting, fishing and baseball tell of a childhood that truly shaped the man, but could have gone so very wrong. A good read, an important story."

"This was an emotional read for me as it brought again to the surface of being young and being an outsider both in my personal home life and in high school. The author writes with such honesty about his home life and the questions burning in his heart throughout his youth. Questions about belonging, self worth and how to overcome that feeling of being second best. The setting is of so long ago but it brings to mind the challenges that our young people must face today ~ where can they turn for support when home is not the refuge it needs to be? This story reminds one that it is important that our relationships are more than superficial and we never really know the inner challenges people are trying to survive. Not only does the author survive but he was brave enough to tell his story. I highly recommend this book."
